It was a drizzly morning all the way up to Priscila and Michael’s Intimate Wedding.
They would be tying the knot at a friend's home nestled above a canyon in San Diego. Originally they had planned to be married outside overlooking this canyon, but due to rain in the morning, the seating arrangement moved inside with their ceremony space outside two open doors, and a blue canopy above them to catch the rain.
When we arrived, the caterer was already roasting peppers on the grill outside and the sky looked hopeful of clearing up. I found Priscila and Michael in the backroom together - Michael already dressed and about to be kicked out of the room so that Priscila could start her getting ready process.
This was the first time I got to meet Priscila and Michael together in person. It had been years since I had seen Michael in person. He was a really good friend of my brother's growing up so I got to see Michael all the time. Since I have known Michael since we were teenagers, this meeting was so sweet, especially since I got to be there to photograph their San Diego Intimate Wedding.
Priscila and Michael met through a mutual friend in October of 2016. This friend, who is obviously a natural matchmaker, showed a picture of Michael to Priscila, and asked if he could give him her number. As Priscila reminded me on the day of her wedding as she started to curl her hair and put on her makeup, she was not looking for love at that time. But that’s how love works, right?
They chatted on the phone and decided to meet for over a meal at Sabor de Vida in Encinitas. The first date was enough to make a lasting impression and they started to spend more and more time together -- which included a healthy dose of ninja turtles and Mario brothers.
It was New Year’s Day 2018, a little over a year later, and with so much love in their hearts for one another they started to have a conversation about marriage. As unconventional love can be, they decided they should get married right away and so an intimate elopement would be planned three months later, with a larger wedding taking place in Brazil.
Priscila is Brazilian and all her family lives there. She actually does not have any relatives in San Diego and due to the short notice, the family was unable to be there physically, but they did arrive by iPad!
One of my favorite moments during the wedding was watching the family watch Priscila getting ready. There is no doubt in my mind how important it was that her family could be there to watch her get married even if that meant virtually. There was only one request Priscila asked of me, and that was that I take a photo after the ceremony of her and Micahel holding the iPad of her family.
The two were married surrounded by an intimate group of family and friends who love them so much, and when the time arrived to be presented, the two hand in hand raised their hands in the air in celebration! It was such a sweet moment.
Priscila and Michael, thank you for trusting me to capture this important moment in your lives. You got married on Saint Patrick’s day, so I think it is only fair to send you off with this Irish blessing:
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be ever at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and the rain fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
may the Divine hold you in the palm of her hand.
