This week I volunteered to photograph Camp Pendleton's Volunteer Recognition Ceremony on base overlooking panoramic views of the pacific ocean. It was a gorgeous day.
As you may know, I have a great appreciation for those who pledge their time to helping others. As a teenager, I spent hours volunteering with Stand Up For Kids (a homeless youth resource center) and Rescue House (a cat adoption center). After college, I went on to serve 1700+ with the AmeriCorps mentoring and tutoring at-risk youth in low-income areas. These experiences were transformative for me and taught me about empathy, kindness, and how to safely hold space for delicate situations.
To be able to photograph this day will remain a distinctive experience for me. The discipline I saw in the men and women in the room holding their heads proudly was electrifying and the camouflage cadet hats resting on the table in front of a chair as a seat saver was a detail I just couldn't help but preserve.
A serious thank you to all these wonderful people who without reserve offer their gifts to our community.
